How One Trip to the Dominican Republic Reminded Us to Slow Down—Island Style

Let Me Explain…
There’s something about watching your carefully made itinerary go flying out the window on Day 2 of your vacation that really makes you rethink life.
We had big plans for our trip to the Dominican Republic – Punta Cana to be exact. Excursions, beach time, the whole picture-perfect schedule. But then, something happened by the end of day 2 -we let go. And honestly? It changed everything.
It was just me and my husband on this particular trip, and we were ready for adventure. But instead of doing all the things, we found ourselves doing less… and somehow enjoying more.
The Beauty of Letting Go of the Plan
Our first full day, we headed out on a group tour to play with some adorable monkeys—this wasn’t even in our plans. It was actually recommended by another couple that had just went the day before. Those cute, fluffy monkeys did NOT disappoint! This was a bit after COVID and all precautions were rolled out to protect them. We were not allowed to actually touch them with our hands but they had no problem sitting on my front lady parts like they were there very own bean bags.

We wandered. We talked. We met a local vendor who sold us coconut water that may or may not have been laced with rum (jury’s still out). And we met a few other couples who were just as happy to ditch the itinerary and lean into island time. It was great. Nothing but doing what we felt like doing at any time. Eating, laughing, drinking…now their local drink is called Mamajuana. That stuff WILL get you in trouble. You have been warned.
But Did You Die?
Some of my closest friends would always say this to me. This time…it rang true. My sweet, dear, handsome husband decided that this was the trip that I was to face my fears of height. Not only once by ziplining through the jungle (12 times) but this followed by parasailing over some of the most gorgeous water I’ve seen. Proof of me facing this massive fear can be found below: (and…I did indeed, not die.)

Slowing Down Brought Us the Real Magic
By the end of day 2, we were ready to just be. When you’re not rushing from one thing to the next, you notice more—the way the ocean sounds different in the morning, how the locals move with rhythm and ease, how conversations feel deeper without distractions.
We didn’t need a packed schedule to feel fulfilled. Just good conversation, new friends, a little sunshine, and a lot of shared laughter.
For couples especially, there’s something powerful about slowing down together. No pressure. No logistics. Just reconnecting—with the place and with each other.
Tips for Slower, More Meaningful Travel in the Caribbean
I’m not saying don’t book the excursions (We are both travel agents, after all 😉), but here are a few things we’ve learned that made our trip feel richer:
- Leave space in your schedule. Don’t try to squeeze in every activity. Leave room for spontaneous fun (and naps).
- Talk to other travelers. Some of the best people you’ll meet are sitting right next to you at the pool bar.
- Venture out (safely). Whether it’s a local beach or a nearby village, step outside the resort bubble and soak up the real culture. This tip, I promise you, you will love!
- Keep it simple. Some of our favorite moments were the most unplanned ones: a card game, a beachside dinner, or just swapping stories with new friends.
If you’re dreaming about your own DR escape, here are a few relaxing, couple-friendly resorts we love (and yes, you can book these directly):

The Takeaway
That trip to the Dominican Republic taught us that slowing down doesn’t mean missing out—it means showing up for the moments that matter. It reminded us that less really can be more, especially when you’re surrounded by sunshine, a good drink, and even better company.
So if you’re craving that kind of connection—whether it’s with your partner, new friends, or just yourself—maybe it’s time to stop planning every second and just… go.
And if the DR is calling your name too? You’ll find a few dreamy spots to start with right up above.
